A cooler classroom in Pak Thong Chai

Children cheering under the Spirit Bright air-conditioner banner at Ban Nong Nokkhian Samakkhi School, Pak Thong Chai

This year, at Monk Duke’s iRetreat meditation retreat in Pak Thong Chai, we heard about a nearby school where children were spending the hottest months of the year in a classroom that had simply become too hot to learn in. In the Thai hot season, rural classrooms can climb past 40°C — and it’s hard for any child to concentrate when they’re just trying to survive the heat.

The fix wasn’t complicated. One good air-conditioning unit turns a stifling room into a place where children can actually focus, sit still, and learn. So, in partnership with Monk Duke and his community, Spirit Bright funded and installed an air-conditioning unit in a classroom at Ban Nong Nokkhian Samakkhi School — and we’re staying involved to keep it running.

It’s the kind of quiet, practical help that doesn’t make headlines, but it changes the daily experience of every child in that room. A small initiative with an outsized effect — and the first of more to come in this community.

And we didn’t stop at the cool air. To mark the day the new classroom opened, we threw a little celebration and treated all 250 children at the school to ice cream — a cool room and a cold treat, on the same happy afternoon.

Celebration day at the school.
